Pub evening then Great Western Morris’s 50th birthday

All the weekend's participants - we're in there somewhere

An evening at The Queen Victoria, Shalford, on 16th June followed (walking distance for David), and then from Fri 25th – Sun 27th June our first full weekend event for 3 years, Great Western Morris’s much delayed 50th birthday weekend (by now their 52nd year). Based once again at the Teign Valley Community Hall in Christow, near Exeter, where the majority of people were camping, this was a fabulous celebratory weekend featuring a strong line up of teams. Unfortunately some of the teams were affected by Covid absences, not least ourselves where David and Heather very unluckily had to cry off at the last moment – shortly after David had spent some considerable time packing up the car ready to come. The weekend commenced with a social evening on the Friday, and then on Saturday morning 6 coaches squeezed into the car park before whisking close to 300 people off down the narrow Devon lanes. BB’s tour headed off across Dartmoor, stopping first for a walk down to and dance at the narrow Fingle Bridge, followed by lunch and dancing at the Drewe Arms in Drewesteignton. The tour concluded with a visit to the dramatic Castle Drogo, designed and built in the 20th century by Edwin Lutyens, and where the imposing architecture obviously overwhelmed several of BB during Jolly Jockey Sticks….

After this the tours returned to Christow for a celebratory Gold themed evening featuring a variety of weird and wonderful spots from the various guest teams. BB weren’t able to offer any contribution to this – lack of numbers at recent practices and at the weekend had meant we’d been unable to come up with anything worthwhile – but we were nevertheless able to enjoy other teams efforts. Great Western also made many contributions to the evening, including poignant tributes to their much missed Fool and key member Mike Boston.
The Sunday saw everyone assemble at Exeter Quays for more dancing, much pizza and fond farewells – overall, a great weekend.
